Become A “Friend of Gaineswood”!

Supported by public funds from the Alabama Historical Commission (AHC), Gaineswood is also fortunate to have friends in the private sector.  Among them are Friends of Gaineswood, a non-profit organization begun in the mid-1990s to help the AHC meet Gaineswood’s costly preservation expenses. Paid annual memberships for 2001 numbered about 200 from across the U.S.

In October 2001, the Friends generously gave the Alabama Historical Commission $95,364 for ongoing Restoration  to stabilize Gaineswood’s domed ceilings, roof, and plasterwork.  That donation and others have established the Friends as a major ally in the perpetual preservation of the mansion.

Presenting the check for $95,364 to AHC Executive Director Lee Warner (holding check) at an October 12 ceremony inside Gaineswood’s Dining Room were (L-R) Friends of Gaineswood Board members Kelley Barnes, John Northcutt, Willard McCall, Gwyn Turner, and Gus Weiss III.

In addition to funding preservation, the Friends have also utilized funds from memberships, donations, and investments to support research, interpretation, and special events and public programs  at Gaineswood.  Successes include:

¨      Research, interpretation and conservation of the Flutina [Barrel Organ] (link), and digitizing the Flutina’s music for resale and playback during tours

¨      Heritage Appreciation Days, co-hosted with Marengo County Historical Society (MCHS) to provide engaging educational programs for schools

¨      “A Candlelight Evening At Gaineswood,” also co-hosted with MCHS, offering entertainment and showcasing the home’s elegance at night, by candlelight

¨      Gaineswood Day, a relaxing, entertaining barbecue fundraiser held every spring to raise money and awareness of preservation needs
