VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

 Are you lucky enough to be retired, or not have to work?  Are you experiencing empty nest syndrome?  Do you wonder what to do to help fill your free time?  Well, wonder no more, below are some worthwhile organizations that would benefit from your experience and help.  Please look over this list, pick one out, and give them a call.

Alabama Rural Heritage Foundation & Center - contact Gayle Etheridge at 334-627-3388 or email ruralher@frontiernet.net.  They will consider volunteers for teaching special classes such a quilting, basket making, etc.
The Bargain Box - call Kitty Eddins at 334-289-4266 or Iona Watts at 334-289-4031.  Volunteers are needed to sort through donated materials, price goods, and work during the opening hours, 9:00-12:00 Monday-Saturday.
Braxton Senior Adult Daycare - contact Annye Braxton at 334-289-2421.  Volunteers are needed to help with activities and serve food to seniors.
Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary - please contact the hospital at 334-289-4000.  Volunteers offer snacks to patients, staff the visitor's desk, assist in the Outpatient Medical enter, staff and operate the Gift Shop, organize several fund raisers.
The Boy Scouts - for information on volunteering for local Boy Scouts troops, contact Larry or Cindy Hay at 334-289-9050.
The Canebrake Players - volunteers are needed to serve on the Board of Directors of this amateur theater group.  A workshop is held each summer for children sponsored by the Canebrake Players.  Volunteers are also needed for productions roles, set construction, sound technicians, and routine clean up of the Old School Theater.  Call Buddy Wilburn at 289-1931.
Coming Together Organization - contact CTO at P.O. Box 1084, Demopolis 36732.  Events sponsored by CTO are a Children's Fun Day, distribute toys to children of low to moderate income families the Sunday before Christmas.  On Christmas morning, 400 low to moderate income families are the recipients of Christmas Dinner.
Demopolis Are Chamber of Commerce - contact the Chamber at 334-289-0270.  Volunteers are needed for committee work for Chamber events, light office work at various times.  Events include downtown walking tours, River City Rumble, Freedom on the River, and Christmas on the River.
Demopolis Area Habitat for Humanity - please call 334-289-8300.  Volunteers to serve on the governing board, co-ordinate volunteers, help in all aspects of construction, and raise funds.
Demopolis City Schools Foundation - contact Jan McDonald, Executive Director at 334-289-2356.
Demopolis City Schools - opportunities to mentor, tutor, or chaperone students, please contact individual schools or the Board of Education at 334-289-1670.
Demopolis Food Pantry - contact Trinity Episcopal Church at 334-289-3363 for more information.  Volunteers are needed to assist with distribution, help with fund-raising, and to co-ordinate community food drives.
The Demopolis Singers - contact jgalloway60@demopoliscatv.com for more information.  The group is a community chorus for people interested in singing a wide variety of music.  Their goal is to provide educational, cultural, and recreational experience in a relaxed and fun environment.
Friends of Gaineswood - is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that exists primarily to raise funds for the long-term preservation of National Historic Landmark Gaineswood.  Volunteers assist with Heritage Appreciation Days, Museum Day, HarvestFest and Christmas in the Canebrake.  Contact Matt Hartzell at 334-289-4846.
Friends of the Demopolis Public Library - volunteers are needed for the board and to assist with planning and programming efforts.  Please contact the library at 334-289-1595 or demopolis.public.library@demopolisal.com .
Harriet's House - not-for-profit shelter for victims of domestic abuse.  334-289-8988
The Marengo County Historical Society - volunteers are needed or special projects such as biannual grounds care at the historic properties, archiving historical materials, and acting as tour guides.  Please contact the MCHS at 334-289-9644 or 334-289-0282.
Marengo County Junior Miss Scholarship Program - volunteers are needed to assist with the organization of the programs, fund-raising, and hosting judges.  For more information, please contact Lindsy Gardner at 334-216-9464.
Pregnancy Center of West Alabama, a member of Care Net - contact Barbara Sessions at 334-289-2273 for more information.  In need of volunteer counselors, receptionist, and clothes closet organizers.
Theo Ratliff Activity Center - call 334-289-2200 or email ratliffcenter@westal.net.  Volunteers needed for all phases of the varius programs at the center.  The Center programs include parenting classes, tutoring, life skills programs and fatherhood programs.
Tombigbee Girl Scout Council - if you would like to help the girls of today learn life skills, call 205-754-5421.
Two Rivers Arts Council - email two.rivers.arts.council@gmail.com with any questions.  This group cultivates appreciation for the performing and visual arts by sponsoring several events throughout the year.
Civic Groups - Business and Professional Women's Organization, Demopolis Civitan Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Pilot Club, Rotary Club.

Don't forget about opportunities to volunteer at your local churches, hospices, school systems, volunteer fire department.  Your local city councilmen or county commissioners appoint various boards and commissions which aid in the administration of city government.
