GLOSSARY For a more complete list of terms, go to NetDictionary. Click - Pressing and releasing the left mouse button once. Domain name - This is the unique name that identifies an Internet location. The segments of the domain name are separated by dots. Double-click - Pressing and releasing the left mouse button rapidly twice. Dragging - Moving the mouse pointer on the screen over a selected object, then pressing and holding the left mouse button down while moving the pointer to another part of the screen, dragging the object with it. Email address - The unique address that enables email to be delivered to a specific recipient on the internet. Email address always use the following format: username@domain.top-domain (e.g., jdoe@westal.net) FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions. A compilation of often-requested information. FTP - File Transfer Protocol. A way of transferring files from one location to another by logging into another site. Host - The server that stores and processes information requests for WWW, telnet, ftp, from local users; also routes requests to other hosts. Host name - This can be both the information after the @ in an email address (eg. westal.net) and the address you would need to ftp or telnet to a remote location (patton.westal.net). IP Address - Numeric representation of a host name (e.g., 207.203.133.65) Login - Entering user ID and password to gain access to a computer system. Login information - Generally user ID and at least one password. Remote host - A host you are trying to login to or send mail to. Right-click - Clicking with the right mouse button once, usually to get a drop-down menu. Site - Can refer to a web page or a location of information such as a Telnet or FTP. System Administrator - Usually the person responsible for maintaining the systems used for Internet connectivity. TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. The protocol used for communications on the Internet. URL - Universal Resource Locator. A standard for locating information on the World Wide Web (eg. http://www.westal.net) User name - The name with which you login to your email or Internet system. Often the first part of your email address before the @. Virus - An insidious piece of computer code written to damage systems. Viruses can be hidden in executable program files posted online or sent by email. Worm - An insidious and usually illegal computer program that is designed to replicate itself over a network for the purpose of causing harm and/or destruction. While a virus is designed to invade a single computer's hard drive, a worm is designed to invade a network.
